Section 2511 of Title 18 of the United States Code (18
USC § 2511) forbids the interception of wire, oral, or electronic
communications and the disclosure or use of illegally intercepted communications.
The statute is written broadly enough that it is illegal, for example,
to record a conversation between two other people without the authorization
of one of the participants in the conversation.
The maximum violation for a first offense under this section is five
years in prison.
Section ___ of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines Manual governs sentences
for violations under section 2511.
