Federal penalties for possession and distribution of drugs are extremely harsh.

There are mandatory minimum sentences for possession (with intent to distribute) certain quantities of drugs, or for the conspiracy or attempt to possess these drugs.

Sentences for possession of drugs are usually governed by section 2D1 of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines Manual.
